Materials from the Islamic East:

Textual Traditions from the Malay World and Java*

Chair: Teren Sevea, Alwaleed bin Talal Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies, Harvard Divinity School

The presentations of this workshop introduce textu traditions and print materials from the Malay world and Java. Presentations describe where these manuscripts and printed materials are archived, and the processes by which these materials were transmitted, written, or rewritten and collected, and read. Presentations will also highlight how a study of the materiality of these texts might even complicate notions of ‘vernacular’ and ‘cosmopolitan’ materials and provide invaluable information about oceanic economies and exchange and understudied actors of the Indian Ocean world. The workshop will serve as one of the first to engage this subject of Southeast Asian Islamic textual traditions.
