It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Professor Emeritus Roy Mottahedeh, a distinguished scholar and esteemed colleague. As the founding director of the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Islamic Studies Program, he was dedicated to advancing the understanding of Islamic history and culture. As the Gurney Professor of History, he inspired countless students and colleagues with his profound knowledge, wisdom, and passion for learning.
Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Mottahedeh made significant contributions to Middle Eastern and Islamic studies, earning widespread respect and admiration. He will be remembered for his scholarly achievements, kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his students and the academic community.
Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. A memorial for Professor Mottahedeh will be held at Harvard University later this fall.
