Johannes Makar

Johannes A. P. Makar is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations (NELC). His dissertation examines modernist debates in late Ottoman Egypt with special attention to the writings of Coptic intellectuals. His areas of teaching and research include the social and intellectual history of Muslim societies; the Arab Nahda; Nationalism; Middle Eastern diasporas; food studies; and digital history. He was previously a Pforzheimer Fellow at Harvard Library and a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Eastern Christian Studies, Radboud University. His research has earned various awards including the Committee on the Study of Religion’s Loeb Fellowship. Johannes is currently developing a digital platform for Coptic resources at Harvard Library. Formerly, he coordinated the Research Methods in Islamic Studies Workshop and Middle East Beyond Borders Workshop.
